Stubborn puppy: My way or the highway

The vast majority of infant puppies have difficulty with the concept of leash walking. The basic principle of walking away from home or the “den” is contrary to their primary survival instincts. Understanding your puppy’s instinct gives you the power to make it work for you.

Moving out of the home

Carry your puppy a short distance and allow them to walk towards home– it will be far easier for your puppy to learn how to walk in the direction of home (a place of comfort and security) than away from it (the unknown). You can also take advantage of your puppy’s growing comfort inside your home by putting them on leash and letting them explore and lead you from room to room before you switch the tables and encourage them to follow you.

Staying calm, positive, and relaxed while you introduce your puppy to leash walking is the key to your success.
