quick tips

To chew or not to chew

Puppies come equipped with a strong, natural desire to investigate. This curiosity can lead to trouble when the natural instinct to explore leads to the destruction of your new shoes. Many owners default to punishing their puppies to correct bad behaviour. However, reinforcing good behaviour is more effective and creates a happier and healthier bond between you and your dog.

Provide “good” chew toys

Begin with a variety of toys to determine which types your puppy prefers. Rotate through your inventory of toys to keep them feeling new and interesting to your puppy. Reward your puppy for chewing on the toys that you have provided. Avoid confusing your puppy-never give access to items that are similar to those you do not want destroyed. Your puppy will likely not be able to distinguish between old and new shoes for example. Supervise your puppy at all times to prevent bad habits and destruction from happening out of your sight.
