The imperfect storm

Does your dog run and hide under the table every time it thunders? Do they begin to pace and act nervous whenever it starts to rain? These may be signs that your dog is suffering from stress and terror related to a fear of storms. Providing comfort to an anxious, fearful or stressed mind will only reinforce that psychological state and increase the likelihood of similar responses, often with increasing intensity.

Treat your dog with kindness when they’re afraid but be sure you don't nurture or reassure the fear. Inadvertently rewarding fearful reactions is the number one reason that anxiety develops into full blown phobia. Instead remain calm and provide a safe, familiar place that feels secure while the two of you wait out the storm.
