training

A good answer is born from a good question.

Q: When is the best age to begin training my puppy?

A: As soon as puppies enter our homes they begin learning. Your job is to prevent bad habits with management tools while you teach them the rules for living in your home.

Q: When you say “positive reinforcement”, do mean you give the dog treats?

A: Our positive reinforcement and motivational techniques are fun, easy to understand, and reward your dog’s natural desire to please. We use treats to establish and teach new behaviours but do not rely on them for the life of your dog. We teach your dog to listen and respond to voice commands, not the treats. Treats are a choice!

Q: Aren’t puppy classes the best way to train my puppy to behave around distractions?

A: Puppy classes can actually make it harder for puppies to learn new behaviours. The most effective way to teach your puppy a new behaviour is to focus in a quiet and familiar environment like your home. If you want your puppy to behave around kids on skateboards, for example, you need to train your puppy first then introduce distractions.

Q: My dog is 5 years old, is he too old for training?

A: No! A dog is never too old to learn! Zoë has successfully trained dogs as old as 12! Many times, older dogs will develop bad habits, separation anxiety, or phobias due to life style changes and stressful circumstances (divorce, death in the family, moving, new baby, a new dog in the home, etc.). As a behaviour counselor and certified dog trainer, Zoë is an expert in “life stage training” and works with dogs of all ages.

Q: How can some dog trainers advertise “immediate results”?

A: There are many trainers who promise “quick fixes” by imposing violence, intimidation, fear tactics, or physical manhandling. Be very leery…this is NOT dog training. Force based techniques will harm your relationship with you dog, and can cause serious, life-long behaviour issues.

Q: Do you guarantee your training?

A: We guarantee that with your full commitment and application of PUP training techniques that you will see remarkable changes to your dog’s behaviour. No one can guarantee that in the absence of consistent leadership that a dog will maintain expected behaviours.
